Your Free Word Count Tool: Everything You Need to Know
This word count tool does far more than simply add up words. It gives you a complete, real-time picture of your writing, from the basics like character count and sentence count, to deeper insights like readability scores, keyword density, and estimated reading and speaking times. Every number updates the instant you type or paste new text, so you always know exactly where your content stands.
Whether you are writing a blog post and need to hit a specific word count, drafting a product description with a character limit, preparing a speech and need to estimate speaking time, or checking that your article is readable for your audience β this tool covers all of it in one place, with no sign-up, no installation, and no cost.
How to Use This Tool
What Every Metric Means
The readability score is calculated using a Flesch Reading Ease formula adapted for this tool. A score of 70 to 80 means your content is easy to read for most adults β ideal for blogs, articles, and landing pages. Scores below 50 suggest your sentences may be too long or your vocabulary too complex for a general audience. Academic writing and technical documentation often score lower, which is fine for specialist audiences.
Keyword density shows you the percentage of times each word appears in your total word count. For SEO, keeping your primary keyword around 1 to 2 percent is generally considered healthy. If a word appears at 5 percent or more, search engines may see it as keyword stuffing, which can hurt rankings. This tool filters out common stop words like "the", "and", and "is" so you only see meaningful terms.
The reading time estimate is based on an average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute, while speaking time uses an average of 130 words per minute β the comfortable pace for a presentation or podcast.
- Blog posts and articles: Aim for 1,500 to 2,500 words for in-depth posts. Google consistently ranks longer, thorough content higher for competitive queries.
- Meta descriptions: Keep them between 120 and 158 characters. Use the character counter to stay within the limit before copying to your CMS.
- Product descriptions: 150 to 300 words is typically optimal. Enough to inform and sell, short enough to maintain attention.
- Social media bios: Use the character count view to stay within platform limits (Twitter: 160, LinkedIn: 220, Instagram: 150).
- Speeches and presentations: Use the speaking time estimate. A 10-minute talk needs roughly 1,300 words at a conversational pace.
- SEO content: Check keyword density to ensure your target keyword appears naturally at 1 to 2 percent, not below 0.5 or above 3.
